The flannel shirt has earned its place as a staple garment for anyone who values comfort and practicality. Recently, 5.11 Tactical sent me its Austin Flannel Solid shirt for evaluation, and it immediately made a positive impression. The shirt strikes an excellent balance between everyday casual style and the subtle functionality that 5.11 is known for.
At first glance, the Austin Flannel looks like any other solid-color flannel shirt. That’s actually part of its appeal. It doesn’t scream “tactical,” and that’s something I appreciate. Instead, 5.11 has incorporated a few useful features into a design that blends in almost anywhere, whether you’re headed to the range, traveling, hiking a trail, or simply running errands around town.
5.11 Tactical provided this shirt at no cost for review. As always, all opinions are my own.
First Impressions
When I pulled the Austin Flannel out of the package, the first thing I noticed was how understated it looked. Unlike many tactical garments that rely on oversized pockets, aggressive styling, or military-inspired details, this shirt could easily pass for something you’d pick up from a traditional outdoor clothing company.
The fit is clean, the styling is simple, and nothing about it immediately draws attention. For those of us who prefer low-profile gear, that’s a good thing. It’s everything I want in an everyday casual shirt.
Comfort and Construction
After wearing the Austin Flannel for several days, its comfort quickly became apparent as one of its exceptional qualities. The shirt is made from a 98% cotton / 2% elastane blend 6 oz brushed flannel. The elastane gives the fabric a bit of stretch. The fabric feels soft against the skin and has enough flexibility that I don’t feel restricted while moving around, driving, or spending time outdoors.
I’d classify it as a midweight flannel. It’s heavier than a basic casual shirt but not nearly as thick as a traditional winter work flannel. During Autumn mornings and cooler evenings here in the Southwest, I have found it comfortable on its own. When temperatures dropped further, it worked well as part of a layering system. It can be worn as an alternative to a jacket or overshirt during transitional periods.

Features
5.11 opted for the use of snaps instead of traditional buttons. The snaps are easy to operate, even while wearing gloves, and they unsnap quickly when needed. The snaps allow the shirt to be ripped open for a quick breakaway and clearing of the garment. For those of us who carry concealed, this faster access can provide a significant advantage over a standard button-up shirt.
The shirt features two chest patch pockets with secure snap-flap closures, including a dedicated pen guide on the left pocket flap for added convenience. A structured collar with an integrated collar band helps maintain its shape, giving the shirt a crisp, polished appearance.

Adjustable snap cuffs and sleeve plackets offer versatile styling options, allowing the sleeves to be rolled up or secured at the wrist as needed. A discreet 5.11 [+] logo is embroidered on the upper back for subtle branding.

The shirt features a slightly curved hem that looks good when worn untucked but still provides coverage in any position. The Austin Flannel is currently available in one length only. It should work for most people.
A good way to check if the length of a cover garment is sufficient is to raise both of your arms over your head. If the garment rides up to a point that it exposes your gun or holster when you do this or it nearly does, the garment is likely too short in length.
The shirt has a hidden zippered pocket concealed behind the left chest pocket. It offers a secure and convenient place to store small items such as cash, identification, or travel documents. Best of all, it’s nearly invisible, preserving the shirt’s clean, streamlined look. It’s a subtle yet highly functional detail that elevates the overall design.

Everyday Use
The Austin Flannel is a great everyday casual shirt. I found myself reaching for the Austin Flannel more often than expected. It proved to be a versatile piece that performed well across a wide range of activities.
One of its biggest strengths is its understated design. Because it lacks an overtly tactical appearance, most people would never guess it’s made by 5.11 Tactical. For many users, that low-profile look is a significant selling point, offering functionality without drawing unnecessary attention.
If you’re looking for a thick, heavily insulated flannel for sub-freezing temperatures, this isn’t it. The Austin Flannel performs best as a three-season shirt in most parts of the country or as a mid-layer during winter months.
Final Thoughts
The 5.11 Tactical Austin Flannel Solid is an outstanding shirt. What I like most is that it avoids it looks great and the common trap of looking overly tactical. Instead, 5.11 has incorporated practical features into a shirt that feels perfectly at home in everyday settings. While it’s not heavy enough to serve as a dedicated winter flannel, I found it excels as a layering piece. Worn over a merino base layer and under a jacket or vest, it provides plenty of versatility when temperatures start to drop.
For travelers, concealed carriers, outdoor enthusiasts, and anyone who appreciates functional clothing that doesn’t advertise itself, the Austin Flannel Solid is an easy recommendation. The Austin Flannel Solid successfully combines everyday comfort with subtle tactical functionality. It doesn’t try to reinvent the flannel shirt, but it does improve upon the formula in ways that many practical-minded users will appreciate.
The Austin Flannel Solid as a MSRP of $80.00. It comes in a variety of color options, including Coyote, Volcanic, Tank Green, Diplomat, Mushroom, and Scarab. Available colors may vary depending on retailer inventory and seasonal production runs. For those who prefer a patterned option over a solid color, 5.11 also offers the Austin Stripe Flannel, in a variety of colors. It features the same design and functionality in a more traditional flannel style.
